Statement of intent:
For my website my chosen theme is framing. I chosen this theme because I believe that there are endless ways to take a picture with a frame. A frame can be anything from making a box with your hands to using the reflection of a mirror. An example of a photographer I have researched is Ansel Adams because he has a variety of pictures that have frames and his work is very professional. I intend to produce a mood board to show the many examples of framing photography so that I have a few ideas on what I can do with my work and how I can make it better. I have chosen to do my shoot in the studio because I have all of the equipment I need.
There are many styles of framing. For example, a mirrors reflection can be used as a a frame because you can only see a fraction of whatever it is reflecting. This is a good thing because you only have to take a picture at a certain angle so that you have everything you want to be in the mirror reflecting so that the camera can capture it all. Another example of a framing technique is using hands. This is a much trickier technique because you need to use a timer and set the frame at the distance you want and in the place you want. This technique involves using your forefinger and thumb on both hands to make a frame and make sure that there is an object or a person in the gap.
Furthermore I will have most, maybe all, of my shoots in the studio because it's easier to set up the equipment and get what I want and need for my the shoot. so that my pictures look as good as they can before I edit them to make them look better. This will also make it easier to do my best and worst because I will easily be able to say what I did right and what I did wrong. The settings of my camera will depend on what my shoot is going to be and how much light there is in the room and distance there is between me and my model/object.
I plan to use photoshop to edit my pictures because it's easy to use, less time consuming and I can save my work and edit it more if I need to. For some of the pictures I plan to make areas of them stand out to the rest of them. This is because the viewers will be attracted to it and wondering why I have done that. For some of the edits I intend to add something of my own (like lines across the picture) so they feel more personal to me.
I intend to take framing pictures because it's eye-catching and makes the viewer question how I did that. I believe that it will also get me a higher grade than I am already on because there is a variety of different styles of framing pictures and edits. At the end of this project I will write an evaluation about my journey from the start to the end of framing. Furthermore, I hope that all of my 'even better if's' turn into 'strengths' by the end of the year because that's when I will know that I have done everything to make thing this website a great one. Also I will make a gallery of final pieces because all of my best work during this project will be there.

Analysis
This picture was taken in the 1950’s/1960’s and it was taken by Ansel Adams at a pier in modern day New York. The work was made to be enjoyed by the audience looking at the boat that’s been framed by the two hands in the photograph and make people question why he took a framed picture of a boat at a pier. Ansel (Easton) Adams was born in 1902 in San Francisco, California, USA and he died in 1984 in a hospital Monterey, California, USA. He was a landscape photographer and environmentalist known for his contrasting (black and white) images of Western America. The work relates to the social side of the time because America’s population was booming at the time. Furthermore trade was growing industry in America at the time. This is important because it also meant more people were arriving in America.
The picture is of a person putting a boat in a frame that has been made using their forefinger and thumb. It’s a landscape picture of a boat and I believe that it’s figurative because it’s been framed. The picture is realistic because it’s in a real location and I think the boat being by itself is exaggerating because it could also mean that you’ll always be by yourself in this world. The theme of the work is framing and I know this because of the fingers being used to create a frame to encase the boat. I think that the message being portrayed is that everyone is welcome to the USA because it's a very welcoming country. However I believe that it's also trying to promote consumerism because of the open port which could indicate that it's open to a lot of trade and it welcomes visitors or new residents.
I can see that middle ground has been used for the boat and foreground has been used for hands framing the boat. An ISO of 800 has been used as there is no noise visible in the picture and an F stop of F/11 has been used because everything is in focus. A shutter speed of 1/60 was used and I know this because the picture is not too dark but nothing is out of focus either. I think that the white balance used was shade because the picture is dark. A compositional rule I can see is leading lines on the towers behind the boat. Furthermore the leading lines make the viewer wonder where the towers are leading them to.
I like this work by Adams because it relates to the work I am doing which is framing. A strength in this picture is that it looks like it’s sending a message that anything can be framed no matter the size to the viewers. A weakness that I can see is that the hands are a bit out of focus and in my opinion it ruins the work a little bit. I could use this idea in my future shoots because it’s a frame made by hands and my work is based on framing. A skill I could focus on is that I could frame objects or a model with my hands and take a picture and I believe this will make my work way better because it shows my creative side.

Analysis 2
This picture was taken in Japan by Yasuhiro Ishimoto. The work was made for the public to enjoy. Ishimoto was born on the 14th of June 1921 in San Francisco, California, USA. He died on the 6th of February in 2012 in Tokyo, Japan. He attended Northwestern University, Illinois Institute of Technology and San Jose City College. He got an award for Person of Cultural Merit. He was a Japanese-American photographer and he went to Japan to take pictures of things in frames. In my opinion the work looks like it relates to the social history of the time because the room is big and it can fit lots of people in it which means that it's good for social gatherings.
It is an abstract landscape picture of many rooms Kyoto's Katsura Imperial Villa which is located in Tokyo, Japan. The picture is a realistic one and no parts have been exaggerated or distorted and the theme of the work is framing. This is because I can see that the floors and walls are all in rectangular frames which makes the viewer wonder why they're all like that and if it was done on purpose or by accident. In my opinion, the picture sends a powerful message that no room is too small for people to socialize or it's emphasizing that freedom is not limited.. I think this because it's a big room and it has enough space for loads of people.
There are strong leading lines all around the room because of the frames around the floorboards and the walls which means that everything has been framed. I can see that there is a lot of midground used because of the floor and an F stop of F/11 was used because everything is in focus. A shutter speed of 1/500 was used and an ISO of 800 because there is no visible noise in the picture. I think that the white balance used in this photograph is black and white because it's a black and white picture.
I like this work by Yasuhiro Ishimoto because it links to the work I am doing which is framing. A strength I can identify is that there are a lot of frames for the walls and the floors and possibly the ceiling could have many frames in many sizes. I could use Ishimoto's ideas in my photoshoot by adding a lot frames I will need to focus on framing objects/models during photoshoots because it's the theme I have chosen. A skill I can use is getting the right angle on an object or a model and then taking the picture because it will add variety to my galleries and also it will make my pictures look more interesting.

Mirror
Glasses
BestThis is my best picture because it's eye-catching. the background is split between grass and pavement. This makes the viewer wonder why it's like that. There is a leading line down the middle where the grass and pavement have been separated. My white balance in this picture was daylight because I was outside. The F stop I used in this picture is F/16 because the background is in focus and the foreground is not. My ISO was at 800 because I didn't want much noise to ruin the picture.
|
WorstThis is my worst photo because the background is out of focus and the glasses are in focus. There are no compositional rules being used which means that there's nothing eye-catching about it. I should have used a higher F stop like F/11 or F/16 because the foreground would have been out of focus and the background in focus.

Shell 1
BestThis is my best picture because it's in focus and you can clearly see the shell from the prism. My F stop for this picture was F/11 because I needed midground. Also my white balance was shade because I was in the studio. Furthermore the photograph is eye-catching because the viewer wonders how I have fitted the shell in the prism.
|
WorstThis is my worst image because there are no compositional rules being used. Furthermore the whole picture is out of focus which means that the F stop was too high and it should have been a low one like F/11. Also the ISO was too high and it should have been low like 800 or less.
|
Shell 2
BestThis is my best picture because it's all in focus and the prism mirrored some of the shell to make it even more interesting. A compositional rule I have used is the rule of thirds. I know this because the shell is more towards the right rather than being in the middle. The white balance I used in this picture was shade because I was in the studio. Also my F stop was F/11 because the shell is in the middle. Furthermore my ISO was 800 to keep the noise out.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture because it's out of focus. There are no compositional rules being used which means that it was rushed and very basic. The F stop in the picture is F/5.6 because the foreground is in focus and midground (which is where the shell is) is out of focus.
|
Shell 3
BestThis is my best image because it's in focus and I can see that the rule of thirds has been used which makes my picture more interesting. My white balance for this shoot was shade because I was in the studio. The ISO I used for this picture was 800 and the F stop I used was F/11. The compositional rule I used was the rule of thirds and it is clearly visible because of the light reflecting from the prism.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture because it's out of focus. The ISO used for this picture was 800 because no noise is visible but the F stop I used was F/22. This made the lens very narrow and it meant that it was zoomed out a lot. The compositional rule used in the picture is the rule of thirds but the shell isn't visible.
|
Shell 4 and 5
BestThis is my best picture because it's in focus and the shell is completely visible through the prism which makes it more intriguing. The F stop I used was F/11 because the shell is in the midground. Also the ISO is 800 to keep all of the noise out of it. Furthermore the white balance used is shade because it was a studio shoot.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture because it's out of focus and no compositional rules have been used. The F stop in this picture was F/5.6 which made the lens really wide. The ISO in this picture was 1600 because there is a bit of visible noise. The white balance I used in this picture was shade because the photo shoot was in the studio.

Frame
BestThis is my best picture because I have used the compositional rule 'rule of thirds'. I can see this because one third of the picture is empty and the other two are full. Furthermore I have taken this picture at an angle which means that there is a variety of pictures in my gallery.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture because someone else's hands are also on the frame. Also you can see my models arm outside of the frame. Furthermore I haven't used any compositional rules in this picture which means that I rushed a bit taking this picture.
|
Frame in a frame
BestThis is my best picture because my model's eyes are open and he is smiling. Also I have used the rule of thirds. Also, the frame around my model has leading lines because they lead to his face. Furthermore he is looking at the camera which makes the picture even more intriguing because it makes the viewer wonder what he is looking at.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture because my models eyes are closed. Also his face isn't/ he isn't smiling which makes the photograph worse because he's got no mood. Furthermore, he isn't looking at the camera which makes the viewer wonder what he's actually doing.

Evaluation
For this project the theme I chose was framing and in my opinion it was one of the best ones I did. The part I found most interesting was when I took pictures of the shells because I got to what prisms I wanted to use and how close or far I wanted it. Some experiences I have gained are that I can use almost everything as a frame and that I can frame anything. A technique I would like to develop further is using the compositional rules whilst using a prism for shells. Throughout the project I mainly researched Ansel Adams and Yasuhiro Ishimoto because they did a lot of framing work and there was a variety of them. In my opinion they have influenced my photographs because many of my photographs are related to their work. The most successful part of my project is when I took pictures of the shells because I had to fit the shells into a prism and take pictures of them. This is because I found it tricky to fit the shell into the prism and take a picture at the same time but the results were great. The only problem I had was the lighting when I was doing the shoots but I managed to sort it out. I learnt that before I start my shoot, I should take a few pictures as a test to check the lighting and make sure everything was set up correctly. This made my final pieces better because I didn't have to keep adjusting the lighting or any of my camera settings until they were right during the shoot. The only thing I would do differently is the shoot with the glasses because I believe I could have taken more pictures with them.
