Statement of intent
My chosen theme is texture. I have chosen this due to COVID and the fact that we can’t always go outside to take a photoshoot. The location I will take these photos in are the studio and school. I intend to research things that have texture. An example of this would be fruits and vegetables. I plan to take photos of fruits and vegetables, outdoor/indoor texture and man made texture. For man made textures I plan to use rusted metal and bricks.
The photographers I intend to research are Edward Weston, Roe Ethridge and Imogen Cunningham because they take pictures of textures and they are linked to my work. The techniques I will use for my photoshoot are rule of thirds, rule of even and odd, birds eye view, worms eye view and leading lines. This is because they will make my pictures look fascinating. In this project I will learn how to edit my photos to make them look natural and and jaw-dropping.
I see my final format with all of my work and research on a website so everything will be in one place. I think my final pieces will be finished edits that look like Edward Weston’s or Imogen Cunningham’s work. I also think that they will mainly be normal photos but along with a few edits as well. I am also planning on combining a few edits to make them look outstanding and creative.
I will use photoshop to edit my pictures like Imogen Cunningham to make them black and white. I will look at natural textures in fruits and plants and edit them to look like they are in the style of Imogen Cunningham. I will also use Google Slides and PowerPoint to make my kaleidoscopes. Some equipment I will use are backdrops, a camera, textured materials and a macro lens. The macro lens zooms into the material so that I can take a picture of the textures that a normal lens can't capture.

Roe Ethridge
Picture name: C'est pas du luxe
It’s a still image by Roe Ethridge. The image type is still life. I know this because the wasps are still. In this image I can see that the wasps are eating apple pieces and in my opinion it looks very realistic. The background is distorted (out of focus) so then we can focus on the wasps eating the apple. The colours in the image are natural and they are complementary colours because they are opposites on the colour wheel. I know this because there are no filters on the image. The title is ‘C’est pas du luxe’ meaning ‘to have too much’. The work represents having too much of one thing like the wasps having too much apple. The theme of the picture is based around having too much food. The message is to share when you have too much food no matter what. I know this because the wasps can’t eat much of the apple.
The picture was published in a book in 2012 and the photographer was born in 1969. Roe Ethridge shared this picture to show his view points on food waste. Ethridge was a photographer and an artist. I think it’s linked to modern day art because many pictures are taken on a camera nowadays.
I think leading lines has been used because the table is exactly in the middle of the picture and it leads my eyes to the wasps eating the apples on the table. This shows that leading lines has been used and a low aperture has been used. I know this because the foreground is in focus and the background is out of focus. I think the F stop used was F/5.6 because the background isn’t in focus at all but the apples are in focus. In my opinion a tripod was used because the pictures is very focused. The white balance used is daylight because the shoot was outside and the ISO used was 800. There isn't any backdrop used because it's nature and it's out of focus. The apple is in the middle ground and the wasps are in the foreground and middle ground but nothing is in the background.
This photograph links to my photo shoot because I am taking pictures of fruit and vegetables. The object used in the photo was an apple which is a fruit. The picture was in colour just like most of the pictures in my photo shoot.
I think the work is very detailed because it’s focused on the apple and the wasps eating the apple. In future shoots I could use his ideas to make photos better, more eye catching and more detailed. This is because I think my work isn’t as good as his but I will try and get to the level that Ethridge is at.

Edward Weston
Picture name: Shells
It’s a black and white photograph taken by an American photographer called Edward Weston. Weston took this picture in his studio in Glendale, California, in 1927. To make this photograph he carefully placed two shells into position and waited for them to look like it's one shell. The work is related to politics because the shells could represent the idea of unification, because the picture is showing two different shells joined together. The name of the shells used in the picture is marine mollusk. This is because they are found near beaches and along the coasts. I think the F-stop used in this picture is F/11 because the whole picture is in focus.
It’s a picture of two shells that are on top of each other which is a still life picture as it’s an object. Edward Weston calls this picture ‘Shells’, as this work is two shells that are together adjacently. I don’t think the title changes the way we look at the work but it makes you realise what it represents and what it is. To me the picture looks realistic and it also looks 3D and the leading lines are in the middle of the shell. I like the way it looks 3D because it makes the picture look more realistic. Also the way the black and white contrast because it shows that a picture from almost 100 years ago can still send a strong message whether it's political or not.
I think there are strong leading lines because my eyes are drawn to the center of the shell. The depth of field used is a close one because the photo is a close up still life, there is a little bit of foreground but there is a little bit of middle ground and distance. The shot is framed but I think Edward Weston used a tripod to take this picture so then he could get a great shot without any of the picture being out of focus. The techniques that have been used are white balance (tungsten I think) and shutter speed (250).
I like his work because it looks like it has a mystery that needs to be solved. The work is in black and white and the shells look like they’re one shell and not two shells which intrigues the viewer. The work is linked to mine because I am taking pictures of still life objects and shells. The strengths in his image is that it looks very realistic because it's a close up photograph, but the weakness is there’s nothing in the background and makes it look plain or that there is something hidden behind the shell.
My opinion of the work is that it looks visually striking and intriguing, luring people to view it, and that everyone should try and get a picture up to Weston's standard. In future shoots I could use these ideas by using a tripod and taking pictures close up to capture the texture of the shell.

Edits
For this edit I used Lens Flare sparingly to make the image look light it has a natural brightness. I used brightness/contrast to liven up the image. Vibrance made the colours richer and more vivid. Layer style got rid of the black background on the picture of the sun.
In this picture I used brightness/contrast to make my colours more vivid and make them look livelier. I also used vibrance to make sure the colours are richer and more realistic.
Outdoor texture
Name: Muhammad Tauseef Mukadam
Project Title/ shoot number: Shoot 1 - outdoor texture
Description of aims for shoot: In this shoot I will aim to take pictures of the textures of the trees and plants in school so that they stand out from the rest of my work
Links with Photographers: I will try and copy the style of Eliot Porter and the way he takes pictures of nature. In his pictures he normally takes close up pictures of trees. I will also try and do that because his pictures inspire me to take pictures of nature.
Location: school
Props/ items needed: Nature
Kit needed e.g. lighting, tripod, backdrop, macro lens: Lights, tripod, backdrop, macro lens
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop : F/11 because it makes the image focused
White Balance: If it's sunny I'll use daylight and if it's cloudy I'll use overcast
Shutter speed: 1/200 so the picture is clear
ISO: 100 - 400 because it will keep the noise out of the picture
Which compositional rules will I use? I will use the rule of thirds, leading lines and worm's eye view. I will use these because they will make my pictures look outstanding and it will give me a variety of pictures to take. These will differentiate my work between old and new because I am going to use the worm's eye view and central focal point for some pictures.

Best photoThis is my best photo because it's got the correct white balance. In this picture I chose the setting cloudy because it was overcast. It's also focused on the tree, which is in the middle ground so I used an aperture of f/16, and the detail of the bark against the blurred background. The image also has leading lines which go vertically across the image.
|
Worst photoThis is my worst photo because the foreground is out of focus and the background is in focus. I should have used a smaller f stop so the foreground would remain in focus. The image also has leading lines but they are blurred out.

Texture second shoot
Name: Muhammad Tauseef Mukadam
Project Title/ shoot number: Shoot 2 - outdoor texture
Description of aims for shoot: In this shoot I aim to take pictures of objects that have a lot of texture and that they stand out from other objects.
Links with Photographers: I will try my best to imitate the style of Eliot Porter because he took pictures of nature and all of them had texture in them. I will also work in the style of Edward Weston when taking composing photographs of nature.
Location: School
Props/ items needed: Nature
Kit needed e.g. lighting, tripod, backdrop, macro lens: Camera, macro lens and a tripod
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop : As I am focusing on textures on objects I will be using an f-stop which creates a smaller depth of field like a f/8 and f/12.
White Balance: I will be using daylight because I will be outside taking pictures of nature.
Shutter speed: I will be using a shutter speed of 1/200 because I believe it’s just the one I need to use as it makes the picture clear and focused.
ISO: I will be using an ISO of 400 as it removes the noise from the image to make it clear and visible.
Which compositional rules will I use? I will try to use the rule of thirds, leading lines, symmetry and worm's eye view. This is because I think that they are the best compositional rule to use when taking pictures of nature and focusing on the texture of the object. Also they make a picture look interesting and intriguing in many different ways rather than a simple picture. This work can also link with Edward Weston as he took some pictures of nature and they were interesting and mind blowing. Edward Weston used leading lines to make his pictures eye catching and I will try to do the same.

This is my best photo because the foreground and the background are out of focus, I have used an for this is f/5.6. Another reason is because the light is only shining on one side, drawing attention to the texture of the wooden banister in the middle ground which is in focus. There are strong leading lines vertically.
|
This is my worst photo because I used daylight white balance instead of flash or shade to make the image brighter. I could have used a spotlight to brighten up the texture of the subject in the image, which would have made the leading lines on the radiator more visible. Nothing is in focus, I should have used an f stop of f/5.6.

Inside textures (Man made)
Name: Muhammad Tauseef Mukadam
Project Title/ shoot number: Shoot 3 - Texture (man made)
Description of aims for shoot: I will take pictures of man made textures that I think look extraordinary and will look good in my photos.
Links with Photographers: I will try to copy the style of Edward Weston because he took a lot of pictures that were man made
Location: school
Props/ items needed: man made textures
Kit needed e.g. lighting, tripod, backdrop, macro lens: Camera, tripod
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop :I will use a small F stop like F/8
White Balance: I think daylight white balance would do for my pictures
Shutter speed: I will use a shutter speed of 1/400
ISO: I will use an ISO of 400 hundred so that the noise will not be in the picture at all
Which compositional rules will I use? The composition rule I will use for this shoot is the rule of thirds and leading lines. This is because I know that they will make my photos look outstanding and will anyone that looks at them jaw dropped. I know this being these two techniques are always used in pictures that are outstanding and famous. Another technique I might include is worm's eye view for the big/tall man made textures and birds eye view for the small man made textures that I will take pictures of during my photoshoot.

Best photoThis is my best photo because I like the way the photo is focused on one part of the keyboard (which is in the middle ground) and the rest is out of focus, I used an f stop of f/2.8. The image is also backlit which makes the texture of the keyboard visible. A compositional rule I have used is the rule of odds because the keys are in columns of five that disappears into the distance.
|
Worst photoThe image is blurry because I used a longer shutter speed while take the photograph without using a tripod for stability. I used an f stop of f/11 which has made the image go blurry. I should have used a smaller f stop so that my camera could focus and the texture and detail created by the markings on the desk. A compositional rule I could have used is rule of thirds to frame my picture better.

Indoor texture ( nature)

Project Title/ shoot number: Shoot 4 - fruits and vegetables
Description of aims for shoot: In this shoot I aim to take pictures of fruits and vegetables that I think will look nice. I want to focus on the natural textures of them, do close ups on them and possibly slice them so that I can get the textures inside them. I would also like to complete my close ups in this shoot as well.

I will try and copy the work of Andy Small and Annabelle Breakey so that my pictures will look professional
Location: studio
Props/ items needed: Fruits and vegetables - apples, pairs, cabbage, lettuce, oranges, grapefruit, peppers, lemons and lime
Kit needed e.g. lighting, tripod, backdrop, macro lens: Camera, tripod, backdrop and lights
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop : I plan to use a small F stop like F/5 so that my pictures are clear and contempt
White Balance: I will use daylight white balance because it will brighten up my pictures. I will also use fluorescent as I am inside taking photos.
Shutter speed: I will use 1/250 for my shutter speed so that my picture isn’t out of focus
ISO: I will use ISO 100- 200 so that my photos aren’t exposed to the sound.
Which compositional rules will I use? The compositional rules I will use for this shoot are rules of thirds, leading lines, birds eye view and central focus point. This is because I know that they will make my pictures look spectacular and make them interesting. Fruit and vegetables
This section is about fruit and vegetables. I hope you like them.
Sweetcorn
Best photo Worst photo
This is my best photo because it's in focus. I have used an f stop of f/2.8 to focus on the foreground and blur out the background. I used a studio lamp to create a diffused light and white balance of incandescent. I used the negative space around the subject to frame the sweetcorn. I have used the rule of even and odd and used he other sweetcorn to create height and cast make the front one cast a shadow on the one behind it.
|
I should have used an f stop of f/2.8 to make the camera focus on the foreground. This is my worst photo because it's out of focus and it's not focusing on the corn at the top, but instead it's focusing on the bottom. I should have used a tripod to help balance the camera and I should have turned of the lights because the image is too bright.
|
Pomegranate
Best photo |
Worst photo |
This is my best photo because it's in focus. For this I used and f stop of f/4 so then the background is out of focus and the fore and middle grounds are clear and sharp. The photo also has a lot of natural lighting coming in which makes the picture feel more natural and creates long shadows. In the top right of the picture there is a natural lens flare created by the positioning of the sunlight. The white balance used for this photo is daylight.
|
This is my worst photo because it's a bit out of focus. I think I should have used and f stop of f/4. I think I should have used auto white balance because the photo would have been brighter. I also think I should have used a tripod so that the picture could be in focus.
|
Apples
Best photo |
Worst photo |
This is my best photo because it focuses on one apple and blurs out the ones in the background. The f stop used in this picture was f/1.4 which blurred out the background and kept the foreground in focus. This has leading lines at the stem on the apple at the front. The white balance used is fluorescent because I was inside the studio using studio lamps.
|
This is my worst photo because the apple underneath the middle one is sticking out a bit. The f stop I used for this is f/5.6 because the whole photo is in focus. The white balance used for this is daylight. The studio light added shadows to the picture to give it some detail. I should have composed the photograph better. I should have used a tripod to make sure it's in focus.
|
Shells
Peppers
BestThis is my best image because it was taken by me in the studio where I could control the lighting and backdrop. I have used fluorescent for my white balance because I was using a diffused light. I used f/5.6 because I wanted to draw focus on the pepper. I used a reflective surface to create a mirror image of the pepper. This also creates a horizontal leading line.
|
WorstThis is my worst image because there is a lack of light. I could have adjusted the studio light and the white balance to make the image come out brighter. I could have put the pepper in the center of the image so that it looks better. Also I could have used a better f stop so that it focused on the pepper. The f stop I should have used is f/5.6.

BestThis is my best photo because the subject of the plant, the flower, the plant and the hanging basket are in focus because I used an f stop of f/5.6. The white balance I used is daylight which captured the vivid colours during this sunny day. I took this picture at a worms eye view.
|
WorstThis is is my worst photo because it's out of focus. I could have used a tripod to keep the camera still. I could have used a smaller f stop so that it focused on the flower at the front instead of all of it. Also I could have composed the picture differently that followed the compositional rules.
|
Cobwebs
BestThis is my best image because the subject of the plant is in focus and the background is blurred. The compositional rule I used for this is worms eye view. The white balance I used for this is daylight as it was taken outside. Also the f stop used for this is f/5.6.
|
WorstThis is my worst image because the subject of the plant is dark. The white balance I used was cloudy instead of using daylight to make it brighter. The f stop used in this picture was f/11 because the whole picture is in focus. There is no compositional rules and I should have used birds eye view.

Edits using image adjustments
Imogen Cunningham
These pictures are based on Imogen Cunningham. As you can see the pictures are showing the before and after for two pictures and their journey from the start to the end.
Edit in the style of Eliot Porter
In this picture I made the picture look realistic. I did this by decreasing its brightness but increasing the saturation.
For this picture I increased the vibrance to bring out the colours more and increased the saturation so that the colours look more lively.

Kaleidoscopes
I found making kaleidoscopes really easy as they are very simple to do. To make them I got an image from my PC and pasted it into google slides. Then I cropped it to one corner of the image. After cropping the image I copy and pasted the cropped part 3 more times. Then I pressed on format, format options, size and rotation and started rotating them to fit each corner.

Evaluation
I began this project by researching a variety of different artists and photographers. One of these photographers was Edward Weston, who took portraits as well as texture photographs. He inspired me to pictures of shells because they have a lot of texture. I enjoyed taking pictures of the shells because there was so many ways I could position them. This made it so much easier to do because the options were endless and I knew I could get great pictures for my website. Another photographer I researched was Roe Ethridge because he took pictures of fruit. His picture C'est Pas Du Luxe was inspiring for fruits because it represents all of life needing food to survive. It inspired me to take pictures of fruit myself because there is texture in fruit, it's just a bit difficult to spot it. At first I found it difficult to spot the texture myself but later on I managed to see how detailed fruit is when you take a closer look.
I have learned a variety of new skills in this project. For example, I learned how to take a picture using the rule of thirds. I also learned how to use photoshop to edit my pictures to make them look better. When I first started editing, I found it difficult and the tutorials were confusing because I was always rushing. I found tutorials that a bit slower and walked me through what I needed to do slowly. After that my edits were getting better and more detailed. I found making kaleidoscopes difficult at first but then I got the hang of doing it and made loads because I enjoyed making them and found it easy. I found the technique rules of even and odd a bit difficult I had to either make the object in even numbers or odd numbers.
I am satisfied with the outcome of my edits because I spent a long time doing them and making sure that they have all the detail they need. This is because I want the maximum grade possible for each edit. The pictures reveal how I feel about this. For example the kaleidoscopes show that my passion for texture is infinite. I have chosen to display my pictures like this because it makes it easier to view them and find them. Also, in my opinion, everything looks better in 3's. If I had more time I would have taken more pictures and done more edits of my own for shells because I enjoyed doing this project. For example changing the hue and saturation for shells because I'm making them different to the other shells. This is because I got to show my creative side taking pictures of the shells and editing them. I hope that viewers of my final photographs will understand that I tried my hardest to make them as good as possible before I uploaded them on my site and that they enjoy looking at them.
